ABOUT IMPROVING LOCAL AIR QUALITY

USE PRIVATE MOTOR VEHICLES LESS OFTEN

The Honda Civic GX recently came out best in a survey to determine which cars have the least environmental impact,to find out
which cars are the worst for the environment, check out the results from

GREENER CARS.ORG

Use public transport(METRO)
note Metro buses in in all Tasmanian Cities ,now allow the daytripper buses to be used anytime after 9-00 am,just buy the ticket
after 9-00 and travel all day on the 1 ticket.

CARPOOL,

From the Environmental Defense Organisation in the USA comes the following information on moves to encourage carpooling.

Everyone can save money on fuel and help the environment with the Commuter Choice program recently authorized by the
Clinton administration. The program serves as an inexpensive fringe benefit offering incentives for not driving alone to work.

, Get a bike,

Bicycles create less parking problems.
They do not use valuable fuels
They do not pollute the environment
Bicycling is a healthy lifestyle

Motorists tend to forget that a bicycle is a "legal" road vehicle with the same rights & responsibilities as cardrivers and motorbike
riders.
If a cyclist is forced to the edge there are added dangers due to broken glass, rubbish, loose edges and drainage grates.
Give cyclists plenty of room as they may have to swerve suddenly to avoid a pothole or other road hazard.
Leave at least 1 metre clearance, when turning left or right, indicate early to allow the rider to ride ahead safely.

Look out for cyclists before you open your cardoor - it is your fault if your cardoor hits a cyclist.Same applies when pulling out
from the kerb.

ADVICE TO CYCLISTS: be aware of motorist's blind spots, around the sides and back of the car.

Collect a copy of CYCLE SENSE FOR MOTORISTS from SERVICE TASMANIA.

It is very pleasing to see the new trend to self propelled vehicles i.e.scooters,these were previously considered a toy,but the latest
styling of stainless steel, collapsible scooters are being embraced by the older skateboarders young girls, children of any age plus
business people zipping around town or their industrial plant.

SCOOTERS

Leave earlier for work or engagements and WALK
this is also good for the heart.

An added advantage is that once you get out into your town on
foot you will see things that you probably missed as you whizzed along in your car.

Unfortunately not all of these are attractive, but you maybe prompted to join with
..CLEAN UP LAUNCESTON in cleaning up some of these blights on our
City,such as VISUAL POLLUTION.

VISUAL POLLUTION

Switch to a more "environmentally friendly" energy source e.g. SOLAR

From Kettering, Tasmania comes news of Mark Mather,a representative of the ,

or HYDRO.

- leaves the trees in the bush - Tassie's fine timbers deserve a better future as an Arboretum or as prestige furniture than being sent
up the chimney.

NEVER BURN GREEN OR DAMP WOOD!
Advice being provided by the Launceston City Council is that when using your wood heater if that is your only option use dry
seasoned wood
run the heater at a full burn for 15 - 20 minutes before turning it down
and remember that a heater should not be turned off so no air gets in.
