NEWS FROM AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL'S
STOP TORTURE CAMPAIGN

Student leader José Miguel Cabuyales Alvear
as been released.

He had been abducted on 5 February by
unidentified men wearing balaclavas, who
threatened to kill him unless he gave them
the names of other student leaders. In the
afternoon of 7 February they told him they
were going to throw him in a river. They
then blindfolded him, took him away in a
car and dumped him in the southern part
of Quito, the capital.

José Miguel Cabuyales Alvear was abducted
after taking part in protests against the
government's economic policy. The police
deny any knowledge of his abduction and
detention.

NO FURTHER ACTION IS REQUIRED ON THIS CASE.

A total of 7,363 online petitions
were sent to the Ecuadorian government
(2,300 in the first 12 hours of
launching the appeal). This is in addition to
the 429 personal emails sent by you to the
authorities.
