and Margaret.

In 1936, her husband became King George V1 when his brother Edward V111 abdicated to marry the American divorcee Wallis Simpson. He ruled until his death in 1952.

and her unflinching sense of public duty.

Heat takes its toll on Queen Mum 01/08/2001

Her Majesty ,Queen Elizabeth 11 will lay a foundation stone
for a war memorial in central London on Wednesday on behalf of her mother who has been advised to rest during England's current heat wave.

The Queen Mother appeared in good form over the
weekend when she and other senior royals, including
Queen Elizabeth, attended the prestigious Ascot horse
races.

Although walking with the aid of a stick, she was smiling
and waving at the crowds as she got into her Daimler car.

She has also benefited from her caring, friendly granny
image, although she famously did not get on with the late
Princess Diana.

Last year, her 100th birthday was marked by a series of
lavish festivities, including a gala pageant in central
London. Admirers professed their devotion, 40,000
gathering in front of Buckingham Palace to wish her well.

The Queen Mother's health has been robust for much of
her life, but it has been marred by a series of niggling
problems over the past few years.

In her old age, she has suffered persistent ulcers on her
left leg, and has problems with her hips which make
walking difficult.

She leans on a silver-handled stick to walk, and
occasionally resorts to a wheelchair or even a golf buggy to
get around.

She had a hip replacement in 1995 and, two years later,
suffered a fall and fractured her other hip, necessitating its
replacement as well.
