Macal River ValleyNestled in the tropical rainforest valley of the Macal and Raspaculo rivers, Belize's Chiquibul Forest Reserve and National Park stand as one of the most unique, biologically diverse habitats in Central America. This fertile floodplain is home to a rare subspecies of scarlet macaw (fewer than 250 of which remain in Belize), the Morelet's crocodile, the tapir, and the jaguar. The Macal Valley is considered a key piece of any conservation plan to save the jaguar for future generations.

Fortis Inc., a billion-dollar Canadian corporation, and the Belizean government are partners in a $30 million project to build a hydroelectric dam that would flood 22 miles of the Macal Valley, obliterating more than 2,000 crucial acres of its unique habitat. Plus, independent analysis has shown the proposed project to be economically unsound, as well as ecologically devastating.

Duke Energy, another company that had been expected to invest in the new dam, has heard the message. After receiving more than 20,000 letters and emails from NRDC members and other activists, Duke recently decided to sell off its own dam in Belize and leave the country altogether.

Send a message to Fortis that a North American corporation has no business destroying Belize's natural heritage for private profit.

Tell Fortis Inc. not to build the dam.
