The late Professor Fred Hollows first became involved with Aboriginal community health in the late 1960's.The high incidence of severe eye diseases he encountered then, moved him to work for equalty in the provision of opthalmic care for all Australians. The first of many programmes Fred instigated was in the seventies, a landmark project that treated in excess of 100,000 people, including over half of the Aboriginal population of rural Australia. Twenty years later in 1997 the FRED HOLLOWS FOUNDATION completed the first phase of it's far north Queensland and Torres Strait Islands eye programme. Due to it's success,it is now a model for delivering opthalmic care to other remote indigenous communities. Read more about Fred Hollows' work at: |
