The 1280 square kms of Cradle Mountain Lake St Clair National Park
contains Australia's most famous walk - The 80 km Overland Track
The easy accessibility from Devonport, Deloraine or Launceston,
also poses a risk to day visitors, who are reminded that the weather may change
at any time and to exercise proper care if walking on the mountain,
always let someone know where you are going.
It is one of the most glaciated areas in Australia,
with many lakes and tarns,
The park covers some of Tasmanias highest land,
including Mount Ossa (1617m), the states highest point.
Lake St Clair is the countrys deepest freshwater lake at over 200m,
occupying a basin gouged out by two glaciers
If not tenting, accommodation is available at the Cradle Mountain Wilderness Village

Fishing in the Central Highlands
has a great reputation
especially for its wild Brown Trout lake fishery.
There are two distinctly different types of lake fishing
available in the highlands.
The larger, deeper, man made hydro storages like
Great Lake, Arthurs, Dee Lagoon
and the smaller, shallower intimate natural lagoons
and tarns of the western lakes.

The old Poatina Hydro Electric village built in 1958,
just over half an hour's drive from Launceston
in Tasmania's Central Highlands was bought by the Christian youth group
Fusion Australia in 1995 .
It is very fitting that the town have a new life supporting
the homeless , unemployed young people as Poatina is an Aboriginal word
meaning shelter or cave.
For Australia Day they will throw open the town's doors
so everyone can enjoy the mountain atmosphere and fun
which will include wheelbarrow races along with other family activities.
