Discovering Tasmania
EAST

The East Coast of Tasmania is known to have the finest weather in
the state, and is often called "Tasmania's Suncoast".

It is a popular cycling route, with the

Great Tasmanian Bike Ride spending

a number of days in the area each year.

St Helens, is the East Coast's largest town.

Inland are some old tin-mining towns,

rainforest remnants and mountain scenery

including at Weldborough

which was a major centre

in the pioneer days with a high Chinese

population,a reminder of that time

is the Chinese Joss House on display

at the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery.

The Joss House remains today, able to be used by

their community,as it was in the mining heyday

of Weldborough, albeit only for special ceremonial occasions.

Read the account above of 1 visitor's

memories of visiting the

Joss House and the QVMAG.

Other towns enjoying a renewed popularity include

Bridport , Branxholm , and Coles Bay

Tourists enjoy :

coastal bushwalking , sightseeing  and recreational fishing

while the locals work in the fishing industry, or on the land .

Tasmania's East Coast and hinterlands  supplies much

of the vegetable produce  for the state,as well as

hops for the local breweries.

The fields of  20 foot high hops vines are a spectacle to be seen

at the height of season.

The industry is worth about $15 million pa to Tasmania,

Tasmania's disease free status is important to it's success

because there is no need to use fungicides.

The North East  is rich in history.

The coast is one of contrast  it is possible to enjoy a fine wine ,

at a luxury resort by day, while relaxing under canvas at the campsite

amongst the native wild  life

especially in the Douglas Apsley and Mount William National Parks

which are  havens for the Forrester Kangaroo.

Plastic Bag Use leads to Animals and Sea Life
 being injured or killed.

Plastic Bags look unsightly
on roadsides and in trees.

The single use of a plastic bag is also a waste,
when there are many more sustainable alternatives
including cloth bags,  use of boxes from the store,
or using a shopping jeep.

In Coles Bay, on Tasmania's East Coast ,
l ocal traders and Council led the country
in banning plastic bags,
picking up on the similar success in Ireland.

In smaller communities like Bicheno, Swansea and Coles Bay
often the provision of essential , community services,
or introduction of innovation has to come from the people
who live and work in the community, rather than government or
business leaders .

It was this free thought that allowed Coles Bay to lead the nation
in banning plastic carry bags.

The next challenge for the region is the attraction of a
community bank to provide  bank branches along the coast at
townships including Bicheno,Coles Bay and Swansea.

The town leaders are currently gathering support from residents and
traders  with pledge boxes being distributed around the town, as a
means of showing the Bendigo Bank that there is a sufficient financial
incentive for them to establish locally.

The Douglas Apsley National Park region
still remains largely undisturbed,
amid much tourist and forestry
activity on Tasmania's East Coast.

The park can be visited as a part of a tour
of other sites in the area,
including the Freycinet National Park, Maria Island
 and Coastal Regions.

Orford, less than an hour's drive from Hobart,
is having a real estate and investment boom at moment, a 1 bedroom cottage
on the beach recently fetched over $400.000 at auction.

These record prices will be expected to continue,
if a planned Greg Norman designed golf course goes ahead
on 270 ha just outside of Orford township.

Beach games, boating and fishing are popular with visitors and locals.

Meanwhile day trips from nearby Triabunna
are popular to Maria Island,
which is a mecca  for walkers and campers.
with the Derwent Explorer ferry running twice a day.

For an added attraction plans are being made to use
the old "Cotswold Prince as a dive wreck off the island.

Swansea ,the oldest rural municipality in Australia,
is another East Coast town attracting new business.

The holiday resort has always been popular,
but now with the 3 interstate ferries
on the run, hotels and campsites are all doing a good trade.

Leading Businesses in the area include:
which retails the produce from a newly established Avocado Farm,
the nuts from the Southern Hemisphere's largest walnut orchard,
just outside Swansea.and berry products from Kate's Berry Farm
