MT LYELL MINE

The mining towns of the West are rich in history and colourful characters past and present.

The Rosebery,Zeehan and Queenstown mines have contributed much to the State's economy while the tourist towns of Strahan and Tullah are favourites with visitors.

Sarah Island on Macquarie Harbour, an 18th century prison outpost regarded by its inmates as being hell on earth.

The Abt railway once took ore and people to Strahan. The line was discarded in the 1960's .

Rosebery is home to the oldest plant growth in the world, a 10,500 years old Huon Pine still growing on nearby Mt Read.
